There are always things in life that surpass your expectations. I have been considering the concept of love lately. In all its various forms, there is a type of love which is majestic, celebrated and honoured. But the Bible then describes a form of love that is even greater that that.
Jesus told his disciples in John 15:13
“Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”
There are many ways to define true love, but I would wager that this definition is pretty hard to top. Yet God demonstrates that his love goes above and beyond even this.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
Paul wrote to the Ephesians with the same theme:
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” Ephesians 2:4-5
God is rich in mercy, and full of love for us, and out of that flows grace, favour that is utterly unmerited. Salvation is given rather than earned. And so is his love, by which we have been offered the gift of life. That is what I find amazing about this love that God demonstrates, indeed, personifies. Such a love that is beyond what we could ever deserve … the highest form of love that exists … is freely available to us should we choose to accept it.
I’m appreciative of the love of friends. But the love of God is awe-inspiring, and certainly exceeds my expectations.
